So I went back and redid the whole body below the neck on my pugnacious gladiator thanks to some great insight from my friend Tyler Jacobson. The downside is that when I finally cooked him he got some gnarly cracks in the bridge of the nose. I think the ones under the left eye (his left) are happy accidents that look like scars. The bridge of the nose one? Not so much. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm leaning towards either stuffing some more clay in there and re-baking or tinting some epoxy sculpt grey and filling it in to look like scar.

My fear with the super sculpy is while it will look the best, it could expand in there and push the face open creating a massive sculpture ruining crack. Any experience with this? Ideas, suggestions welcome.

While on vacation in Salt Lake Mary Runolfson graciously lent me her ipad for the weekend. I tried Sketchbook Pro and Brushes and so far I have found Brushes easiest to use and most 'to-the-point'. Here are three paintings I created in Brushes using my pogo sketch stylus. The first is the venerable value ball. The 2nd a candle of Lacie's back lit at dusk and the 3rd is a painting of "Black Pool" in Yellowstone Park. For the last painting I did use photo reference but did not copy the photo. It is still very loose and took a frustratingly long time when compared to what it would have taken to arrive at the same result in photoshop. That said I love the freedom and sometimes speed of ipad painting. I would love to experiment more with painting outside and in places laptops or desktops dare not go. Finally the pogo stylus was great but I wish it was a little thicker in the handle, thinner at the tip and that the tip was more robust. Mine flaked off in places and is generally scrunched now. One more quick note: These all have slight levels and colors adjustments to better match how they looked on the screen. When viewed on a desktop the images seem slightly more washed out and desaturated than they did on the ipad itself.

Skull Guy - an experiment with WED clay

This was a semi-successful experiment for using WED clay on a maquette. The biggest problem was my on-the-fly armature and my lack of a clear idea for the body design. This led to some wire sticking out where I didn't want it, cracking due to drying and the body being a simple anatomy study rather than anything else. Lessons learned: WED is fast until you lose control of the drying time. Doing smaller details such as teeth or fingers takes longer with WED clay but blocking in forms and redoing large surface areas takes much less time.

The assignment was to reproduce a real movie poster of a recent or current movie using at least 4 layers, adjustment layers, masks and at least 4 text layers. Must include a simulation of both the visuals and font as well as the full credits (but with your own names, made up names etc.).

I picked one of my absolute favorite posters from Julie Taymour's version of Titus w/ Anthony Hopkins. Once that decision was made it was clear looking at Mr. Hopkin's face that it had to be changed to a bull dog...and I happen to have one in my family.

Hugo and Lacie helped with the source picture and then add another 7-10 hours of minor photoshop tweaks and hand painting the blue paint onto Hugo's face and you get this image.

Animation 101

Badgers: Lip sync assignment. Create original character and key poses from provided soundclip. Lip sync from 5 different basic mouth shapes.

Beat Assignment: This is the final project in my Animation 19A class. The project was that we had to pick a song with a strong beat and then create two different animation cycles that sync with the beat. I used this as an oppurtunity to do a little development on an idea i had for a music video for my favorite White Stripes song "Prickly Thorn but Sweetly Worn". I plan to keep impoving the animation on my own time and adding to it.

FILM: Why i got back into photography

Film is still the best when it comes to absolute image quality. Film more closely recreates the way our eye and brain 'sees' a bright area that is glowing with light (highlight areas) and can still capture a wider contrast range at a far lower cost and do it in a way that is more pleasing to the eye than with digital cameras as they function now. I believe that digital cameras will eventually change and come up with their equivalent look and functionality but as for right now the way digital sensors currently operate and the way their software is currently designed to function doesn't recreate this look of a broad range of natural looking graduations and deep colors without having both ultra bleeding edge, incredibly complex and expensive (and often fragile) technology and construction.

>If you like taking photos of places/landscapes or people in natural, widely varying lighting situations and high quality is more important than high quantity, then film is your best bet. Another advantage isn't really the film itself as much as how the process of taking a picture is changed when you can't get instant feedback. This change of workflow forces you to preconceive the image and when trying to become both a competent photographer and artist, being able to conceive of and plan your work in your imagination is possibly the most valuable skill you can have. A perfect example of this is Dale Chihuly the glass sculptor. He cannot work the glass himself anymore due to his shoulder injuries but because he can conceive the sculptures and work with assistants to create them.

>If fast paced, high quantity, controlled lighting, commercial photography is your business, then a move to digital makes sense where you have to turn around work ultra fast, you can control the environment and the client can influence the overall look of your work (and you're getting paid enough to play 'keep-up' with technology).

Even if you are a commercial photographer and fall into the latter category I think it's best to keep film in the picture by using it in your personal work at least to experiment if nothing else.

These are my photographs that I create for fun and to serve as documents of aspects of my life. I don't claim them to be great works of art and certainly I don't think of my photography to be a serious pursuit such as my drawing and sculpting but they serve as creative source of fun and to further my other artistic skills (allowing me to practice, framing/cinematography, helping to hone my painting and sculpting eye). This type of photography never was satisfying for me until I rediscovered film.

"Soaked" mini-bust

This is a sculpture that started out as the long nose head study and became this rain-soaked character huddling under plastic. This bust is approx 7 in tall and made of victory wax, some short lengths of steel plumbers piping and a plastic bag. He is meant to look as if his hair is wet and he has sculpted water drops collecting under his right ear lobe, his nose and his chin although they are hard to see in the photos. I got the idea for the plastic bag after setting him down on a leftover bag that my film came in from the photolab. It matched the wax perfectly! There is also a major overhaul (hard to see in the pictures) to the proportions of his head. the Original head (seen in the long nose w/ scar photos below) was too short and too thin around the temples. His head is now lengthed and widened appropriately. He still is one of those people that appears to be 'all face'. I feel like there is a strange similarity to Napoleon Bonaparte actually (just with less fat and a massive scar).

Mouth Study-first mold/casting

While working on the below head maquette I was running into some problems getting the correct shape of the mouth and lips and so I made a small study sculpture in pro-clay. I then decided it would be a perfect and simple sculpture to experiment with mold making on. I made a one piece tin-silicone mold (using smooth on OOMOO 30) and cast in Activa Permastone which is both durable and cheap :). Original on the left, casting on the right.

"The Boxer of Calais"

The hand that I sculpted for fun in my earlier post grew into a full figure that is essenstially inspired by (but not a copy of) my favorite Rodin sculpture "Jean D'Aire" from the "Burghers of Calais" sculpture of the six men from the town of the same name walking to their certain deaths. This is why the general pose and naming of the character is similar (although I changed it because the positioning of the original is so unnatural looking.

The person or character is taken from an image that sprung up in my mind of this very rugged, thick boned, older man who has spent his life fighting with everything and everyone and his face and hands now are broken and healed again into this grizzled character. Here is exploiting his natural strengths and boxing so that he can channel his aggression and strength into something slightly more productive and safe.

Wax Sculpting

I think I've found my favorite maquette sculpting material: microcrystalline wax. It smooths beautifully and easily by hand. It's hard enough to hold shape well and it's soft enough (in heat) to mold with your hands. It accepts shaping from tools extremely well and it sticks to itself but not to you. It also has virtually zero odor. You also get the added bonus of this beautiful black and orange bronzed look.

These pictures are of a sculpture I made for Steven and Lisa Runolfson, owners of "La Caille" (The quail) restaurant in Salt Lake City. This sculpture is for Lisa and Steven's 30th wedding anniversary and it is part wax (the birds) and part super sculpey (the base). It was created in the loose "Bart Walter" style. The sculpture is approx 15 in long and about 9 or 10 in tall.

Last Jr. Nightforce painting

This is supposedly the final Jr. Nightforce concept art/painting. It is of the magical box/cube that Riley finds. This box unfolds and creates a magical map that leads Riley to his next task at hand.

So I can't believe how effective it is to do a smaller version of a painting (i.e. a digital thumbnail or layout) and then to blow it up and finish it. In this case I created the first (thumbnail painting) in "Colors!" the beautiful painting program for the Nintendo DS. The 2nd picture is the blown-up/finished version that I did in photoshop. Total painting time from start to finish is no more that 2-2.5 hours!!!

I spent over 7 hours on this painting reworking and fidgeting different aspects of both the environment and the characters. I'm fairly happy with what I got but I do think i would have been happier if I had got this result in half the time. I feel like this was too slow for so much time against the grindstone. I think that metaphor makes sense...it's late as I write/post this.

These are two final character paintings. The first one is the evil boss of the evil corporation and the second is the mad scientist cohort. Both of these are designs from my co-worker's next cartoon pitch. There should be plenty more where this comes from in the next week.

Psychologically speaking, this picture just appeared out of nowhere. It's just a simple painting of a robot traipsing through the forest as it comes upon a monarch butterfly in mid skip.
